REACHING OUT TO THOSE IN NEED - THE BDCI BUDDY SCHEME

The British meat industry has had its own charity for well over 150 years. The Butchers’ and Drovers’ Charitable Institution (BDCI) carries this strong tradition on to the present day. The industry remains generous in its support, but the needs of those who find themselves in need of assistance is constantly changing.

Historically, assistance offered by industry charities has mainly been in the form of Alms Houses that provided affordable accommodation for those leaving the industry due to age or infirmity. This has changed significantly and the BDCI has responded accordingly. Last year it was able to provide over 120 grants to help people remain in their own homes and communities.

However, with many butchers shops and smaller slaughtering and processing plants going out of business, and larger businesses having to consolidate in the face of an ever more competitive trading environment, the biggest challenge faced by the BDCI today is building awareness amongst those who need help.

It’s for that reason that the BDCI Buddy Scheme was formed. With a responsibility for the welfare of staff, it was felt that HR mangers would be the best people to approach to recruit as BDCI representatives within their organisation.

The scheme was trialled successfully with the HR team at Tulip in 2010 and the BDCI remains committed to rolling it out across industry. However, with limited resources available, the BDCI is reliant on approaches from those in industry who feel they may be able to take on a Buddy role.

BDCI communications manager, Andrew Garvey, said: “Although we ran the trial with HR managers, anyone involved in the meat industry can take on a Buddy role. If you know of someone in need, or you would like to apply to receive more information about signing up as the BDCI Buddy within your organisation, please call the BDCI help line on 01727 896 094 or e mail info@bdci.uk.com”.
